Part 1: The project I think I could have done better with writing my blog post about was the very first project, Perspective. My clay project was really fun, though the challenge was daunting when I began. I hadn't done clay since early first semester of last year, so I was a bit rusty when it came to technique though I remembered the basics. She shape I was going for with the melting chocolate and expanding marshmallow proved a challenge, since it's so free form and non-symmetrical. The smooth texture was also hard to achieve unless I used a tool to flatten the surface with a lot of water. All in all, some of the colors I picked ended up not quite right compared to actual s'mores. The graham crackers are a bit too red, and the marshmallows aren't quite white enough, and if I could I think I'd go back and fix them. When I began painting the clay, I had the idea to possibly make the marshmallows different colors, like the flavored marshmallows, but decided it'd be better to go with the classic white puffy look since it'd be easier to recognize as s'more. One of the things I'm glad i did was I glazed the chocolate and left all the other colors matte and painted them with acrylic instead. The glazed chocolate made it look more convincingly gooey since when chocolate melts it gets shiny. I also like how I added the little dents and dotted line on the tops of the graham crackers. I wish I'd figured out how to put more texture into them, though. They look rather flat, whereas graham crackers are crumbly and bumpy. Part 2: My most successful piece of art this semester was the Artist Painting. Not only do I think I followed after the artist I was assigned to the best of my ability, but I'm really proud of the outcome. Painting with acrylic is not one of my favorite activities, but this painting wasn't all that bad. In fact I enjoyed it.
The piece above was painted by Johunna, a classmate of mine that sits at the same table as me. It was for the Artist Painting project and the artist she got was Andy Warhol.
I love the idea and think it fits the point of the project really well. The colors pop just like an Andy Warhol piece would, and I love how they contrast so well with one another. Since she sits at the same table, I got to see her working on this piece and watching it in the process of being created was really fun. She was skeptical at first and wasn't sure what colors should go where, but when she got to working it all fit together perfectly like puzzle pieces. Whats even crazier is before this project she'd never painted with acrylic before. For the first time she used acrylic I think this piece turned out really, really well. Along with the painting, her drawing of the crown itself is awesome as well. It's incredibly symmetrical for a freehanded drawing, and I still don't know how she did it so well.
